The goal of online Blackjack is to get as close to 21 as possible without going over and to
have a higher score than the dealer. This is why the game is also known as 21.
The game begins with both “you,” the player, and the dealer receiving two cards, but the
dealer only shows one card while keeping the other face down. You always go first at this
point, and you have the option to “hit” and take more cards, or to stay. In Blackjack, the Jack,
Queen, and King are all 10 value cards, whereas the Ace is unique in that it can be either 1 or
11, depending on the situation. If you do not bust (your total card score is greater than 21)
and “stand,” the dealer is forced to hit until he has 17.
You can make four major playing decisions at the blackjack table as a player. These are
hitting, standing, splitting, and doubling down.
Hitting: Taking another card in order to increase the value of the hand.
Standing: indicates that you do not wish to receive another card. You are satisfied with the
value of the cards dealt in this case. You have a strong hand and/or don’t want to bust.
Doubling down: is available only on your first two cards or after you split if the sum of your
first two cards is equal to or less than 11. When you double down, you bet the same amount
as your original bet.
Splitting: is an option you have when the first two cards dealt are of equal value to each
other. If you have a pair of twos or a pair of fours, you have the option to split those cards.
When you split, you must add a second bet equal to the first and the cards are split into two
hands. Then you are going to be dealt with the second card.
There is one final option for the player when the dealer has an ace up, and that is to buy
insurance. Some players want to insure their hand against the dealer’s blackjack. To do this
they hit insurance and insurance is bought. Should the dealer have a blackjack, the player
would lose the game but the insurance will pay two to one so that would mean the player is
going to break even.
Outcome and payout:
- If the player has total 19 and the dealer has total 18, the dealer cannot hit anymore and
the player wins. The player wins an equal amount to what they just bet. If the player
busts, the dealer does not need to take on more cards and the player loses the bet. If
the player and dealer score is the same, this is called a push and player gets back the
money he bet.
- There is another way the player and win at blackjack automatically, and that is if the
player is dealt a blackjack. This happens when the player is dealt an ace and a 10
value cards as the first two cards. When the player is dealt a blackjack, the payout is
three to two (bet Euro 100 and total payout Euro 250 [100 bet plus 150 wins]) and is
paid right away.
